Meet the Governors
Hello, and welcome to the Governors' section
Before becoming a governor I wasn’t aware of the full role and scope of the governing body at St Richards so I thought I would get some information down on it that you may find useful.

The Governing Body - What we do
All UK schools have a governing body by law. It is an effective way of supporting the school in many areas. The governors are a group of volunteers who meet at least 3 times a year who have a keen interest in keeping the school as successful as it can be. Governors can sometimes bring in skills and experience from the workplace, such as building or financial, or can offer an alternative opinion on any area of running the school.
In a nutshell the governing body has the role of overseeing and checking. This could be in setting aims and objectives, agreeing targets and monitoring them, agreeing budgets for the school, or reviewing school policies.
The governing body is said to have the role of ‘critical friend’ which means that they will challenge the school's senior leadership on issues of performance and effectiveness, however, they do not have any input or influence on the day-to-day running of the school which is absolutely left to the highly qualified staff.

In all voluntary church aided schools such as ours, 10% of all school building costs needs to be found and raised by us. It is for this reason that the governing body organises events and campaigns to raise the funds not given by the state, to cover the full costs of building works. The Penny Mile Challenge, and the up and coming Race Night event are recent examples.
